FMP – Character Development

Recently I have been practicing anatomy as well as trying to speed up my drawings to be able to produce more concept art, but also with a style that I think would look presentable even as a rough sketch.

I have been using a resource pack (that has been gifted to me by my colleague), that has a male and a female model, in different poses for my references. My current way of working is to look at the reference, quickly draw it out in my sketchbook, and then select the drawings that I like, scan them in, print them out, and draw armour on top of the copies.

On average, each drawing took me about 5-10 minutes, which I think is plenty of time to draw the basic shapes, and then add in the detail for aesthetic purposes. What I would do then, is print out a copy of each and draw on top of it to create armour.

Character Helmet Practice

My current plan is to split a character into different sections:
Head
Torso
Arms
Hands
Legs
Feet

I would then draw an A3 full of different sections each, then choose perhaps 2 different views, create 2 separate copies and draw on top of the copies to find the type of armour that I want to go for. On average, I would end up with about 1-2 pages of different designs per section, so between 6 to 12 pages per character. Then I would choose the pieces that I like, and create a final concept for the character.

The main goal now is to create 3 different characters.
Male – Warrior
Female – Rogue
Creature – Mage

I want to practice both male and female anatomy in this project, and also practice drawing animal-like creatures too with the same shadow-sculpting technique that proves to be quick and aesthetically pleasing.

In addition I will also try to create very quick pareidolia sketches to find an interesting silhouette for different armour pieces.
